Pickles and chutneys are always a popular gift at this time of year. If you’re thinking of giving a cheese board as a gift, how about adding some homemade goodies? Oatcakes, crisp biscuits or smoky, spicy sweet onion marmalade. It only take a little patience to sweat down the onions and the result is magical. It makes a bought gift very personal and thoughtful.
Smoked Chipotle Onion Marmalade
Makes 660g of marmalade (Just under 1and 1/2lb)
- 30g unsalted butter
- 1 tablespoon light olive oil
- 900g red onions thinly sliced
- 200mls sherry vinegar
- 3 smoked chipotle chillies (add more to taste)
- 50g redcurrant jelly
- 150g light Muscovado sugar
Method
- Melt the butter in a large frying pan with the oil over a medium heat
- Add the onions and stir to coat with the oil and butter
- Leave to sweat for about 10 minutes stirring occasionally, do not allow to colour
- Stir thoroughly and cover the pan with a lid or foil and cook over a low heat for a further 20 minutes
- Meanwhile soak the chillies in warm water
- Remove the cover and add the vinegar and stir in the redcurrant jelly
- Remove the chillies from the water and slice thinly
- Add the sugar and the chillies, stir well, Cook until the sugar has melted and the mixture is syrupy, about 15- 20 minutes. Stirring occasionally to stop the mixture catching.
- Remove from the heat and spoon into sterilised jars, Seal once the marmalade has cooled completely

This is a lovely gift. I love to make onion marmalade because it’s so lovely with baked ham. I love your gift tags – they’re very retro xx
I love onion marmalade too, this is just a little different with a wonderful smoky flavour. The labels are just luggage labels from the stationers. GG x
How delicious… I bet it tastes oh so smoky!
It does, really tasty. GG
I would love to give something this nice for Christmas. Aren’t you the clever one and you’ll have people returning the jar for a refill, I’m sure. Happy Christmas!
Happy Christmas to you too. GG
Looks gorgeous as always GG!

Thanks Janie GG
I am a lover of smoky chipotle but more so is my OH. Seriously smoky chilli is poured over everything by him. This is one I would make for him. Would crab apple jelly work too?
Do you mean instead of redcurrant? Yes it would. GG
That looks so good – I’ve made onion marmalade before but never with chipotle chillies, great idea and I have some so will try this!
It has a wonderful smoky flavour. GG
What an intriguing flavour combo! I really like the sound of this GG 😀
It really works and is so tasty. GG
I LOVE anything with chipotle chillies in it and this is a FAB recipe thanks GG! Just the sort of thing that would pep up a cheeseboard. Karen
Thank you. It’ll certainly be on our cheese borad. GG
What a fabulous flavour! Where did you find chipotles in the UK? Last time I went to America I brought some back with me.
Hope you are having a nice weekend
*kisses* H
I bought it in Waitrose, a largeish tub, they are great. GG
G’day! What a lovely gift GG, true!
Wish could come through the screen and try some now too!

Hope you had a lovely christmas and a very happy 2014 to you! Another fabulous gift recipe, you’ve been on a wonderful roll haven’t you?! And lucky, lucky friends you have to receive all these goodies. I was thinking about attempting something similar with Gran Luchito paste, but didn’t get around to it in time for christmas. Yours sounds truly divine!
Thank you, I did have a great time giving some of these things away. Hope you have a wonderful 2014. GG
